Language
Main Languages spoken in Nairobi are English & Swahili, a simplified version of the older Coastal Swahili. English tends to predominate; higher education and parliament tend to get by instinctively by it, and the media use it heavily. You'll always find English speakers in the towns. Out in the country, local languages come to the fore, with Swahili as the lingua franca where strangers have to communicate - on the roaads, markets and official business. While it's helpful and not difficult, to speak some Swahili, you'll rarely have problems without it - just more demonstrative conversations.
